Chatsworth in the snow

With the snow and freezing temperatures over the last couple of days I didn't think it was a good idea to drive up on to the moor so I went to Chatsworth instead. I was hoping that with the freezing weather some waterfowl might have been forced on to the river but the only unexpected birds were two drake Tufted Duck but they were accompanied by the hybrid Tufted/ Pochard which is the first time I've seen it this winter. I first saw it in February 2014 so it's been wintering in the area for quite some time.

There were lots of Siskin feeding in the Alders along the river and they looked very festive in the snow laden trees.

Evidence of birds being forced of the higher moors came in the form of two Common Snipe flushed from the river edge and a lone female Stonechat, both species are very scarce along the river.

There were plenty of Redwing around and one or two Brambling but the scenery made up for any disappointment on the bird front.

More migrant arrivals and signs of birds breeding

More Spring arrivals today with my first local Willow Warbler (I heard one at Carsington last week) and Tree Pipit in the Flash Lane area with House Martin a couple of days ago.
Evidence of the breeding season getting underway with drake Mandarins chasing a female over Rowsley and a female Siskin having a comical tussle with some Sheep's wool which it was struggling to remove from a Hawthorn bush.

Off course other species are much further advanced with Mallard ducklings on the river already and I'm expecting juvenile Common Crossbills on the wing some time soon and had great views of a young male bird on the moors today.

Siskin in the garden

Mentioned yesterday that there are plenty of Siskin about now, and up to a dozen regularly visiting the garden feeder. Some of the males are starting to look very smart as the pale feathers tips, hiding the black and green plumage, are worn away.

Siskin

James spotted this Siskin bathing in our small garden pond and quickly grabbed my camera and got this shot.

Siskin on the garden feeder

All quiet at the moment but a few Siskin have started to visit the garden feeder.
