Another Waved Black in Darley Dale

The tenth record of the Waved Black moth was recorded today in Darley Dale. Unsurprisingly it was Simon Roddis who caught it, I say unsurprisingly as he also caught the prior 9! Simon lives fairly close to the wood yard at the back of DFS and we have previously speculated that this is the original source of the records. The ten records are spread over 17 years of moth trapping in the village so it's not quite an annual event.
I'm not aware of any other records in Derbyshire so it's a real Darley Dale speciality. I've previously published the UK distribution map for anyone interested.

Waved Black - Darley Dale

Amazingly this is Simon's 6th record of the Waved Black in Darley Dale during the past 13 years. There are very few records elsewhere in the County and it appears that a colony has established itself at a wood yard close to his house sometime in the past with the original insects arriving on imported timber.
This example is in good condition although it looked like a bird had taken a section off the tip of the left hand wing which I have Photoshopped back on.

Waved Black - Darley Dale

Simon has done it again with his 5th record of Waved Black in 11 years. The population appears very local to Simon as I have never caught it despite trapping most of the nights when Simon has caught them, and only being approximately a kilometre away.
We have previously speculated that there could be an established colony in the wood yard close to where Simon lives. How, or when, they became established there is anyone's guess but Simon has confirmed that wood is imported from France.
It has a status of Nationally Scarce B which means there are records from 31-100 10km squares in GB since 1980.

Waved Black

Simon Roddis has done it again, his third Waved Black in 9 years on 27th July, the others were on 2003 and 2009. as far as I know these are possibly the only Derbyshire records although there appear to be one or two known sites in neighbouring Nottinghamshire.
I'm only 1/2 a mile away as the Waved Black flies so it can only be a matter of time.
