First Yellow Horned Moth of the year

Despite some fairly heavy showers overnight it was my best catch of the year with 20 moths of 7 species which included my first Yellow Horned, Clouded Drab and Hebrew Character of the year. The Yellow Horned's name refers to the antennae colour which are actually more orange than yellow.
It is a scarce moth in the County but the Darley Dale area appears to be one of its strongholds. It's probably widespread in the surrounding birch woodlands but there is not much moth trapping done in these areas at this time of year.

Yellow Horned

Added Yellow Horned and Clouded Drab to the year list last night.
The Yellow Horned owes both it English and Latin names (Achyla flavicornis) to the bright orange antennae which are clearly seen in the photo below.
In the last annual report of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Entomological Society (2010) the only records of the Yellow Horned in Derbyshire were from Darley Dale submitted by Simon Roddis and I.
The species has historically only been recorded from a small number of sites in Derbyshire. The lava feed on both Silver and Downy Birch which is very widespread in the Peak District so it may be the fact that the flight season is typically March when there is less moth trapping activity which may explain the paucity of records.

A hand full of moths

It was slightly warmer last night so I ran the moth trap and after several weeks of nothing finally caught a few moths.
Yellow Horned and Common Quaker (3) were new for the year and I also caught Hebrew Character (2), Satellite (2) and a Chestnut. The Yellow Horned was a nice record as I failed to catch it at all last year and they only fly to the middle of April.
