Despite suffering a UK population decline of 70% in the last 25 to 30 years the House Sparrow is still a familiar and common species in the villages of the Peak District. It does seem to be restricted to the village habitat and is not regularly encountered in arable areas. The male immediately below is already loosing the pale tips to the feathers on the upper breast to reveal the black bib of breeding plumage. The two males on the branch are also both males with the lower bird more advanced towards breeding plumage and having already lost the yellowish coloured bill of winter.
